The Perfect Stick started with writer Derek taking his son Denver on camping trips. It began when Den, who is now 14, was a one-and-a-half-year-old, the pair would venture out and explore the vast wilderness of British Columbia, Canada.
Denver loved two things: sticks and rocks. More time was spent tossing rocks into the water than you can imagine, but things really started to heat up when Den realized sticks came in all shapes and sizes. Some were thick, some were thin, some difficult to break, others would snap in the wind.
Every time a new stick was found, a new adventure began. Camping trip after camping trip it was the same thing; it was so reliably awesome that Derek started writing down all of Denver’s scenarios. On August 6, 2015, according to the journal father & son kept while camping, the idea for The Perfect Stick became inspiration for a book, a book that would hit shelves nine short years later.
